HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and Honorary President of Emirates Energy Award (EEA), today attended the EEA 2012-2013 ceremony, organised by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy at Grand Hyatt hotel in Dubai. The ceremony was attended by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Supreme Council of Energy, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), and President of EEA; HE Ahmed Butti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Energy, DEWA’s Board Members, senior government officials, leading business executives, energy experts, representatives of energy companies and members of the press.
In his opening speech, Al Tayer said: “In line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, to achieve the UAE Vision 2021, which aims to make the UAE one of the best nations in the world, and the importance of diversifying our energy resources and enhancing our leading role as world center for renewable energy and the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to promote sustainable energy initiatives. The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy is striving to put these directives, initiatives and ambitious strategies into action; an example of which is the launch of the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030. This aims to diversify our energy sources to comprise a mix of 71% from natural gas, 12% from nuclear power, 12% from clean coal and 5% from solar energy by 2030,”.
Al Tayer praised the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, which have a strong impact on the energy sector, and have contributed to consolidating the UAE’s position as an international leader in energy efficiency and security.
Al Tayer underlined the diligent support of HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum in developing the energy sector and in establishing an integrated system for promoting the sector, which has strengthened Dubai’s international stature and the UAE’s bid to host the World Expo 2020 in Dubai.
The Award, distributed every two years, aims at rewarding best practices and leading initiatives in the areas of energy efficiency, alternative energy, sustainability, and environmental protection. It is a global platform to highlight a select club of winners from the MENA region, while emphasising their achievements in demand management, energy management, and conservation. The Award underscores their efforts in different areas of the energy sector and provides them the recognition they deserve.
“The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy is presenting the Emirates Energy Award, which was introduced to honour the leading initiatives and practices achieved by public and private organisations, and individuals involved in the energy industry. The Award also aims to create a stimulating environment and integrated ecosystem that helps promote a culture of excellence and sustainability in the energy sector.
The Award highlights best global experiences and practices that enhance the rational use of energy, promote the sustainable use of alternative clean resources, reduce dependence on traditional resources to mitigate environmental pollution, strengthen the role of institutions and individuals, and raise awareness on the importance of rationalised use of energy and environmental protection. This Award also aims at rewarding best practices and leading initiatives in the areas of energy efficiency, alternative energy, sustainability, and environmental protection,” Al Tayer added.
A committee comprising high-calibre experts shortlisted and evaluated the entries, to ensure that they met all requirements. The final submissions were reviewed by the Technical Committee, who then presented the selected winners to the Executive Committee for approval. With prizes totalling US$ 1 million, the winners were honoured as per the award’s various categories.
The Awards Ceremony
HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, accompanied by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer honoured the winners of the different categories as follows:
- Large Energy Project: The Gold Award was presented to the Morocco-based NAREVA Holding; the Shams Power Company (United Arab Emirates) was honoured with the Silver Award, while the Bronze award was given to the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA).
- Small Energy Project: The Gold Award was given to the Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company ‘du’ (United Arab Emirates); the Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry was honoured with the Silver Award, while the Bronze award was given to Empower Company (United Arab Emirates).
- Energy Efficiency for Public Sector: The Gold Award was given to Masdar (United Arab Emirates); RTA was honoured with the Silver Award (United Arab Emirates), while the Bronze award was given to RasGas (State of Qatar).
- Energy Efficiency for Private Sector: The Gold Award was given to Al-Futtaim Group Real Estate (United Arab Emirates); the Arab Contractors Company was honoured with the Silver Award (Egypt), while the Bronze award was given to ABB/ Al-Khaleej Sugar Company (United Arab Emirates).
- Education Energy Award: The Gold Award was given to the Friends of Environment Society (Jordan); Dr. Hanan Talib was honoured with the Silver Award (United Arab Emirates), while the Bronze award was given to HSBC Bank (United Arab Emirates).
- Research & Development Award: The Gold Award was given to Ayman Adnan Almaitah (Jordan); the University of Bahrain was honoured with the Silver Award (Kingdom of Bahrain), while the Bronze award was given to the Nitrate Production System (Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan).
- Young Professional Energy Award: The Gold Award was given to Abdul Aziz Al Obaidli (United Arab Emirates); Mahmoud Shatel (Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan) was honoured with the Silver Award, while the Bronze award was given to Aisha Ali, Aya Abu Hani and Noora Rashed Al Kaizi (United Arab Emirates).
- A Special Recognition Award was awarded to the organisations that succeeded in reducing energy consumption, including: Saudi Aramco (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia); Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Sports Complex; Dubai Investment Park (United Arab Emirates); Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme; Emirates Transport, for the use of clean transportation fuels; Dubai Silicon Oasis; and Drydocks World (United Arab Emirates).
The ceremony included also honouring the sponsors who supported of the award: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) as a strategic sponsor and Dubai Aluminium Company (DUBAL), Dubai Petroleum Establishment and Dragon Oil as Gold Sponsors.
Following the award ceremony, Al Tayer thanked all partners, sponsors, and people who contributed to the success of this prestigious award.
Al Tayer congratulated the winners and called on all involved in the energy sector to play a vital role in strengthening the cooperation to achieve the highest levels efficiency energy. He also explained that the Award’s Executive Committee, in cooperation with all concerned parties and international organisations, is currently working on expanding the geographical scope of the award worldwide.
